National HERS Ratings

The Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index Score is the national standard system by which a home’s energy performance is evaluated. HERS Ratings verify the energy performance of a new home to ensure it meets the minimum national standard. Components often verified under the HERS Index include ducts, HVAC, and insulation.

As certified RESNET Raters, we are qualified to perform HERS Ratings nationally in every state for new construction, alterations, and additions across residential and nonresidential development. Our HERS Ratings services are similar to our ECC Ratings services performed in California, but require different approved registries, energy code standards, and certifications. Our expertise has frequently taken us to several other states, including Washington, Nevada, and Arizona.

Additionally, we are experienced in submitting certifications with several HERS-Providers, including RESNET, BER, BSI, and Evergreen.

We specialize in the following HERS Verifications and Tests:

  • Duct Leakage Testing: Measures air leakage in the duct system to verify compliance with California Energy Code requirements and ensure efficient HVAC performance.
  • Whole-House Ventilation / Indoor Air Quality (IAQ): Verifies that mechanical ventilation systems provide the required outdoor air rates to support healthy indoor air quality.
  • High-performance Attic/Wall Inspections: Inspects building envelope assemblies to confirm proper installation of insulation, air barriers, and energy-efficiency measures.
  • Refrigerant Charge & Airflow Verification: Confirms that HVAC systems have the correct refrigerant charge and airflow to operate efficiently and as designed.
  • Fan Watt Draw/Efficacy: Measures HVAC fan energy consumption and airflow performance
  • Existing Conditions Documentation: Documents existing building, mechanical, and energy-related conditions to support alterations, retrofits, and code compliance verification.
  • Quality Insulation Installation (QII): Verifies that insulation is installed to industry standards with proper alignment, coverage, and minimal gaps or compression.
  • Domestic Hot Water System Verification: Confirms that water heating systems, piping, and other components meet applicable energy code requirements.
  • Compartmentalization Blower Door Testing (Multifamily and Commercial): Measures air leakage between units and building compartments to verify energy efficiency and enclosure performance.
  • CF-3R Compliance Documentation via CHEERS: Submission of certified third-party verification and registration of required energy compliance measures through the CHEERS registry.

As an approved Whole-House HERS-Rater for projects aiming to achieve beyond compliance standards, we can verify and consult projects to achieve performance-based ratings and certifications such as Energy Star, Zero Net Energy, LEED for Homes, GreenPoint Rating, and CalGreen.

HERS Ratings for Multifamily and Custom Single-Family Homes

As nationally trusted HERS-Raters for any type of development, we are uniquely capable of supporting a project in any development phase from insulation to move-in ready. Whether group or 100% sample testing, we can support projects to meet any state’s requirements. Additionally, we can support those projects that aim for superior performance standards such as ENERGY STAR, LEED, GreenPoint Rated, or CalGreen.
